BET Digital Scrubs Written News Archive in Pivot to Video

BET Digital has wiped its entire written news archive from BET.com, scrubbing years of cultural documentation in favor of a video-first pivot. According to a report from Baller Alert citing HuffPost deputy editor Philip Lewis, the network eliminated its digital text articles to focus exclusively on multimedia content. "BET Digital has permanently removed all its digital news articles from its website to ‘prioritize video content,’ I’m told. Years of news articles are now gone forever. Some writers were able to save their stories; some weren’t," Lewis noted. The shift follows the company's August 18 announcement repositioning BET.com as a distribution hub designed to funnel traffic toward YouTube, Paramount+, and broadcast programming. Orchid Richardson, BET’s senior vice president of digital, stated at the time that the network is "leading with video, and we’re putting community storytellers at the center of BET News." BET also introduced a Community Reporting Initiative across cities including Atlanta, Memphis, Houston, and New York to recruit multimedia contributors. Corporate media consistently treats digital text as disposable inventory rather than a historical ledger. Wiping decades of Black political reporting, cultural criticism, and investigative work to chase algorithm-friendly video views is corporate malpractice disguised as modernization. Outside of the reputational damage, the sudden purge leaves freelance and staff journalists without access to their professional clips. BET has not announced whether an internal database will be made available to former contributors or researchers.
