In Rotation: SMJ
Atlanta's female rap ecosystem is currently the most fertile ground in hip-hop, and SMJ just planted her flag right in the middle of the soil. Her debut project, Pleasure To Meet You, is a 12-track introduction that doesn't waste time clearing its throat. By pulling Anycia and Pluto into the fold, she ties her sound directly to the city's current vanguard. SMJ dropping a full 12-pack out the gate is a massive flex. She clearly cares about building an actual catalog. Releasing a full body of work is a risky move in an era built on bite-sized consumption, but it pays off here because she has the pen to sustain a longer runtime. "ROUND & ROUND" is the joint keeping my speakers warm this week. The 808s hit with that heavy, humid Georgia swing, while her vocal cuts through the bass with a sharp, unbothered delivery. She spits her bars like she’s already got the advance check cleared in her bank account. Then you get to "My Block" featuring Pluto—which just got a crazy live performance video on HIT-A-THON 2—and she shifts gears entirely. The beat gets frantic, the drums stutter, and she just glides over the chaos. The gatekeepers are already paying attention. Apple Music threw "ROUND & ROUND" at the number one spot on The Plug and New in Hip-Hop, while Spotify slid it into New Music Friday. Terrestrial radio is catching the wave too, with adds from WHTA in her backyard up to Chicago's WPWX. The data simply proves the timing is right. But the metrics are just noise compared to the actual records. SMJ is rapping with the raw, mixtape-era hunger we used to get before streaming algorithms dictated tracklists. She’s got the city on her back. Check it out below.
