Jay-Z Petitions Appeals Court to Revive Extortion Lawsuit Against Tony Buzbee

Shawn Carter is not letting this go, and from a business standpoint, he shouldn't. Following a full recantation by his accuser, Jay-Z filed a petition on Thursday asking a California appeals court to reverse its recent dismissal and revive his extortion lawsuit against Texas attorney Tony Buzbee. According to Billboard, Carter's legal team is seeking a rare rehearing in the case. The appellate court initially dismissed Jay's extortion suit earlier this month, but that ruling landed right before the unnamed Jane Doe filed court documents admitting her rape allegations were entirely fabricated. In that filing, she also claimed Buzbee and her legal team conducted negligible due diligence before bringing the 2024 suit, which was quickly dropped. When accusations of this magnitude hit the docket, the reputational fallout is immediate, regardless of how fast the claim unravels. Rehearing petitions in appellate courts are notoriously difficult to secure, but Buzbee turned high-stakes legal practice into a media circus. Carter has the balance sheet to see this through, and he should push it to the wall to set an expensive deterrent for attorneys who treat career-ending allegations like leverage for a quick payout. The appeals court has yet to issue a response to the petition.
