North Carolina Opens Early Voting Ahead of November General Election

By Lora·October 15, 2026·1 min read

North Carolina’s early voting window opens Thursday, Oct. 15, giving residents across the state a two-week runway before Election Day arrives on Tuesday, Nov. 3. The early period runs through Saturday, Oct. 31 at 3 p.m., according to a report from local station K97.5. Anyone waiting until Nov. 3 is voluntarily gambling with their own time. Early voting allows eligible voters to cast their ballots at any approved site within their county, though hours and specific locations vary locally. The North Carolina State Board of Elections provides an online Voter Search tool to verify registration status, check precinct addresses, and pull sample ballots ahead of time. The state enforces strict identification rules at check-in. Voters must present an acceptable photo ID, such as a North Carolina driver’s license, a passport, or approved student and government IDs. Those without identification can still cast a provisional ballot under the state's exception process or obtain a free voter ID directly from their county board of elections. For residents who missed the standard registration cutoff, early voting offers same-day registration provided they bring valid proof of residence, like a utility bill, bank statement, or paycheck. Absentee ballots can also be returned directly to election officials at early voting locations. North Carolina law explicitly bars photos or video of marked ballots, so keep the camera off in the booth. Voters can check polling sites, operating hours, and sample ballots at the North Carolina State Board of Elections website before heading out.
