Spotify Purges 50 Million AI Slop Tracks from Recommendations
Spotify announced Tuesday that it has stripped roughly 50 million AI-generated tracks from its recommendation engine this year. According to reporting from Variety, the streaming giant shared the metric in a blog post outlining its ongoing attempts to manage the unchecked flood of synthetic audio taking over the service. Fifty million is an absurd figure. It is also an admission of just how badly the platform's gates failed in the first place. Real working artists have spent the past eighteen months watching their algorithmic reach shrink while faceless, prompt-generated white noise siphons off royalties and pollutes discovery queues. Scrubbing those tracks from recommendation feeds helps clean the surface, but it feels like using a thimble to bail water out of a boat when the upload valve remains wide open. For listeners and musicians, the disclosure proves Spotify knows the rot exists. Whether the company has the appetite to fundamentally shut down the bad-faith uploaders clogging the infrastructure is an entirely different issue.
