Major Labels Propose AI Warning System While Suno Plays Nice Under Legal Fire

The battle lines over generative AI in the music business are being drawn with icons and metadata. According to a report by Music Business Worldwide, a powerful coalition of eight major industry organizations—including the RIAA, the Recording Academy, and SAG-AFTRA—has proposed a voluntary labeling system for streaming services to clearly flag AI-generated music. Under these guidelines, tracks will be categorized as either "AI-Generated" (where AI created the bulk of the music or lead vocals) or "AI-Assisted" (where humans did the heavy lifting but used AI tools for specific elements). Suno, the heavily funded AI music company currently being sued for copyright infringement by Universal Music Group and Sony Music, quickly issued a statement supporting the concept, stating that "transparency is important." Suno claims it is investing in watermarking and audio fingerprinting to help artists disclose their AI use. This cooperative tone is a calculated survival tactic. Warner Music Group, initially a co-plaintiff in the RIAA-coordinated lawsuit, already settled with Suno back in November 2025 to enter a licensing partnership. Suno is trying to show the rest of the majors that it can be a compliant business partner rather than an existential threat. But the scale of the problem is massive. Music Business Worldwide notes that Deezer recently reported AI-generated tracks made up 44% of all new music delivered to its platform, while Apple Music stated over one-third of its uploads are "100% AI." Labeling this digital flood is a necessary step, but let's be real: a tiny visual icon on a streaming app isn't going to save the traditional industry from being completely drowned out by machine-made noise.
