Throwbacks: Ginuwine - Ginuwine...The Bachelor

On October 8, 1996, R&B shifted on its axis, and the epicenter was somehow Pyramid Sound Studios in Ithaca, New York. That’s where Ginuwine, alongside producer Timbaland and the late pen god Static Major, crafted *Ginuwine...The Bachelor* for 550 Music/Epic. The album introduced a whole new sonic architecture.

Listen to the lead single "Pony." You already know the bassline. It sounds like a digitized bullfrog choking on a vocoder. Underneath that, Timbaland’s drum programming stutters and snaps in ways traditional R&B producers weren't touching yet. Ginuwine rides that jagged beat with pure vocal silk. He took Prince's brazen sexuality—he even covered "When Doves Cry" later on the record—and grounded it in the baggy-jeans swagger of mid-90s hip-hop. It is still wild to me that "Tell Me Do U Wanna" dropped as the second single in March 1997 and kept the momentum going flawlessly. *The Bachelor* permanently changed how the genre moved. Every male singer who came after owes a tax to this record. Hit play below.
