Throwbacks: OutKast - ATLiens
When OutKast bounced between Atlanta spots like Bosstown, Doppler, and Studio LaCoCo, then carried those sessions up to New York’s Chung King and Sound On Sound, they were building a frequency nobody had ever caught before. Dropped on August 27, 1996, via LaFace and Arista Records, *ATLiens* is the exact moment the South proved it could be unapologetically weird and entirely intergalactic.
They leaned heavy into outer space-inspired sonics. The bass lines hover. The drums knock with a swampy, extraterrestrial bounce. Big Boi and Dre didn't just give us a sophomore album. They built a whole new solar system. I'll always argue this is their most crucial record. It’s the bridge where they stopped being just dope emcees and became absolute visionaries. They showed everyone that Atlanta had its own cosmos. Hit play below.
