When The Roots left Geffen for Def Jam to drop their seventh studio album, they didn't command a massive studio budget—they basically booted up Apple's GarageBand. Released on August 29, 2006, Game Theory stripped away the neo-soul warmth that defined their early run. It is a dark, gritty record.

The shift wasn't just sonic. By putting a minimal emphasis on melodic hooks, the band backed themselves into a corner. They fought their way out with pure aggression. If you ask me, this is the exact project where Black Thought stopped being merely a great MC and morphed into a terrifying one.
