When The Roots released Illadelph Halflife on September 24, 1996, they deliberately dragged their live instrumentation through the mud of Philadelphia's underground. Following 1995's Do You Want More?!!!??!, Questlove and the crew figured out how to make a drum kit and a bassline sound exactly like a sampled loop from a dusty crate.
