Throwbacks: Yung L.A. - Ain't I

In late 2008, Grand Hustle was running a clinic on Atlanta rap, and Yung L.A. was positioned as their next breakout star. His debut single "Ain't I" hit the streets on November 25, 2008, backed by Interscope Records, and it immediately hijacked the radio. Produced by B Franks, the beat is pure futuristic bounce. It originally bubbled up earlier that year featuring Big Kuntry King for a project called Crush Da Block. But when label boss T.I. and L.A.'s mentor Young Dro realized what they had, they jumped on the track for the commercial release.

Let's be completely honest about this record: Young Dro caught a body here. L.A. brought the swag and the infectious hook, but Dro's verse is a masterclass in unorthodox cadences. He floats over B Franks' production with a reckless bounce that still feels ahead of its time. "Ain't I" peaked at number 47 on the charts and was supposed to launch L.A.'s debut album, Futuristic Leland. That project ended up shelved, making this track a brilliant, frustrating glimpse at a run that never fully materialized. The ringtone era swallowed a lot of talent, but this joint survived.
