Tyler Perry Launches Maxscene to Back Independent Filmmakers

Tyler Perry is leveraging his capital to build a distribution pipeline legacy studios routinely abandon. Tyler Perry Studios announced the launch of Maxscene, a specialty development and acquisition label designed to finance, develop, and push independent films to theatrical audiences, according to reporting from Complex. The venture honors Perry’s late mother, Willie Maxine Perry, who passed away in 2009 at age 64. Maxine, a longtime New Orleans preschool teacher who inspired Perry’s Madea character and anchored the 2023 documentary Maxine’s Baby: The Tyler Perry Story, provided the initial encouragement for his career. Perry explained the motivation to Variety: “Maxscene exists to be that same source of belief for the next generation of storytellers. It’s about taking the confidence and encouragement she poured into me and paying it forward by championing filmmakers who need someone to believe in them.” Antoinetta Stallings, head of development and acquisitions at Tyler Perry Studios, will oversee the label. Stallings previously served as vice president of unscripted programming and helped establish the studio’s joint venture with Pantheon Media Group. The launch arrives as Perry continues expanding his 365-acre Atlanta lot with a new Synapse Virtual Production LED stage. Major studios have largely gutted mid-budget theatrical distribution in favor of dumping smaller titles straight to streaming queues. Perry has the infrastructure and cash flow to undercut Hollywood's bloated overhead entirely. Maxscene could disrupt the festival acquisition market if it genuinely commits to theatrical rollouts rather than quick catalog filler. Expect Maxscene to begin announcing its inaugural acquisition slate in the coming months.
