UMG Partners With ElevenLabs to Launch Licensed AI Remix Platform
Universal Music Group is making its next calculated pivot into generative tech. According to Billboard, the major label has struck a multi-year licensing agreement with AI audio developer ElevenLabs to construct a bespoke music platform for fans. Per the announcement, the platform will be “built on licensed music and artist participation.” The core functionality hands consumers the ability to remix, mash up, and co-create using material from catalog acts and songwriters who opt in. Leveraging ElevenLabs’ footprint in vocal replication, the service will also let users render “personalized vocal experiences,” alongside broader audio tools aimed at creators. The announcement notes that further products and fan integrations will roll out “in the months and years to come.” The corporate calculus here is obvious. For the past two years, majors treated unauthorized vocal clones like an existential threat. Now, they are setting up the velvet rope to monetize the exact behavior they took legal aim at. Handing listeners the keys to an artist's voice under an opt-in model makes financial sense on paper, but reducing catalog vocalists to modular prompt assets still feels cynical no matter how tidy the licensing contract looks. Expect rollouts and participating roster announcements as platform testing expands.
