UMG-Backed Music IP Holdings Launches AI Patent Portfolio to Monetize the Machine

Universal Music Group is no longer just fighting generative AI in the courts; they are building the tollbooths for it. According to a report from Music Business Worldwide, UMG-backed AI Music IP Holdings (MIH) has unveiled a portfolio of over 24 patents—with another 50 pending—aimed at regulating and monetizing AI-generated music. This is the corporate machine adapting in real-time. Instead of trying to ban AI covers and remixes, MIH is licensing the technology to facilitate them under strict parameters. The patents cover both closed platforms and open ecosystems, using watermarks to track and monetize content wherever it travels. The first platforms to sign up are AI music generator Udio and Khosla Ventures-backed social streaming service GRAI. Some purists will view this as a surrender to the machines. But in reality, it is a calculated land grab. If tech startups are going to flood the internet with AI-generated derivatives anyway, UMG wants to ensure they collect a tax on every single byte. MIH CEO Daniel Drolet stated the portfolio was developed to give creators the ability to "generate, track and ensure new AI revenue streams" while managing unauthorized outputs. It is a pragmatic, if sterile, solution to an existential threat. The patents extend beyond audio into video, film, and name and likeness rights.
