Universal Music Group Partners with ElevenLabs for AI Fan Remix Platform
Universal Music Group is monetizing the inevitable. The major label announced a multi-year licensing agreement with ElevenLabs, tasking the AI audio company with building a dedicated fan platform for remixes, mashups, and "new track interpretations." The pact marks ElevenLabs’ first partnership with a major record label. Valued at $11 billion following a $500 million Series D led by Sequoia Capital, the company plans to keep this fan-facing platform distinct from its existing ElevenMusic app and Music API. According to reporting from Music Business Worldwide, this marks Universal’s third fan-creation licensing pact in under four months, following agreements with Spotify and remix platform Hook. All three operate on an opt-in basis for artists and share revenue. The urgency to formalize these agreements follows hard data: a 2024 study by content identification firm Pex revealed that 38.03% of songs analyzed on TikTok in 2023 were pitch- or speed-modified, up from 24.55% the prior year, diverting streaming royalties away from rightsholders. "UMG and ElevenLabs are aligned that responsible AI can inspire discovery, deepen engagement between artists and fans, and unlock new revenue opportunities for the creative community," UMG Chairman and CEO Sir Lucian Grainge stated. Sanctioning remix tools inside a corporate sandbox will never fully eradicate unauthorized bootlegs across social platforms. Still, Universal knows securing licensing payouts and platform control beats watching outside developers build multi-billion-dollar empires off untracked catalog stems. Expect additional rollout details on the standalone platform in the coming months.
