Universal Music Group Sues DistroKid Over Copyright Infringement and AI 'Slop'

Universal Music Group is taking DistroKid to federal court. In a lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware, the music giant accused the world's largest DIY distributor of deceptive trade practices, rampant copyright infringement, and flooding streaming platforms with AI-generated "slop." According to reporting from Music Business Worldwide, UMG alleges DistroKid spent years misleading the market by masquerading bot-farmed audio as authentic human art, knowingly siphoning streams and revenue away from working artists. The timing is critical. DistroKid, which claims to handle roughly 40 percent of all new music globally across four million artists, recently agreed to a ten-figure majority acquisition deal with private equity firm CVC Capital Partners. Universal is coming for a piece of that bag, listing 1,000 specific recordings and seeking statutory damages of up to $150,000 per work. That puts the initial claim at $150 million, though the complaint makes it clear those tracks are just the tip of the iceberg. The majors finally drew a hard line against the algorithmic cash grab.
