Universal, Sony, and Warner Back Stability AI in $76M Series B Round

By Lora·August 27, 2026·1 min read

The major label strategy on generative AI has shifted toward direct equity. Universal Music Group, Sony Music Group, and Warner Music Group have all acquired stakes in Stability AI by participating in a $76 million Series B funding round, according to Music Business Worldwide. The investment round drew capital beyond the music ecosystem as well, bringing in video game publisher Electronic Arts and investment firm AMD Ventures. This is a calculated consolidation of leverage. Rather than simply fighting model training in court, the labels are securing ownership in the tech itself. Universal and Warner have already established strategic partnerships with Stability AI to build commercial models trained on their respective catalogs. Bringing Sony into the cap table alongside them turns a defensive licensing posture into a long-term enterprise bet. Major labels will always prioritize financial ownership over theoretical debates about automation.
