In Rotation: Coast Contra

You can't teach hunger, but you might be able to inherit the blueprint when your parents are West Coast lyricist Ras Kass and R&B powerhouse Teedra Moses. The bar for entering the music business in that household is already touching the ceiling. Twin brothers Ras and Taj Austin didn't duck the pressure. They linked up with Colombian-born Rio Loz in high school, eventually pulling in North Philly spitter Eric Jamal to form Coast Contra. They sound like a four-headed cypher monster that got locked in a basement with nothing but a crate of breakbeats. Their latest project, THE FIFTH, dropped late last summer, and it’s a masterclass in bar-heavy execution. The official video for "DON'T WORRY" just hit, and it captures exactly why they are carving out an undeniable lane. Most rap groups today are just three solo artists taking turns on a hook. Coast Contra actually gives a sh*t about group dynamics. They weave in and out of each other's verses, dropping synchronized choreography while spitting complex schemes over dusty loops. It shouldn't work. Choreography in boom-bap usually looks incredibly corny. But they execute it with such aggressive precision that it feels like a battle tactic rather than a routine. You hear that North Philly grit from Eric colliding with the West Coast foundation laid by the twins and Rio. It is a beautiful collision. The algorithms are finally catching up to the footwork. "Code - Remix" just slid into Apple Music’s The Cosign and BASE:LINE playlists. If you want to hear them stretch out musically, skip straight to "GOD'S GRACE" featuring Rae Khalil—the vocal textures there are ridiculous. And if you’re in Los Angeles this coming August, they are sharing the Hollywood Palladium stage with Lupe Fiasco and Hieroglyphics for Hiero Day L.A. 2026. That is exactly the room they belong in. They are carrying the torch for technical, sweat-on-the-mic hip-hop. Hit play below.
