In Rotation: Daiela

It isn’t every day you stumble across a West L.A. native balancing a Contemplative Studies major at Brown University with a burgeoning career as a drummer, producer, and R&B vocalist. Daiela is pulling double duty, and she is making the rest of us look lazy. Born into a deeply musical family—gospel roots on her dad's side, vocal training directly from her mother—Daiela Simon-Seay has the kind of foundation you simply cannot fake. You can hear the Jazmine Sullivan inspiration in her vocal runs, but her rhythmic phrasing pulls straight from Ella Fitzgerald’s jazz scatting. She takes that deep, analog lineage and filters it through a modern neo-soul lens. She already grabbed major attention when Apple synced her track "HYPER DAI" from her debut EP Dancing With My Shadow, but her current rotation is what has me hooked. The new track "iCRY" is a clinic in vocal arranging. Daiela stacks her harmonies thick, building a massive choir out of her own voice. The bassline walks with a heavy funk step, while the drum pocket anchors the groove. Because she is a drummer herself—frequently hopping behind the kit during her own headline shows—the percussion never feels like a digital afterthought. The snare snaps right on time, but the hi-hats drag just enough to give the track a breathing, human pulse. The industry is finally catching up to the dorm-room hustle. Spotify just slotted "iCRY" at the #3 spot on their POLLEN playlist, which remains premier real estate for left-of-center R&B. Meanwhile, she is currently prepping a senior thesis visual album exploring the four seasons and womanhood, gearing up to hit the road after she grabs her degree. I will always respect a singer who actually knows their way around a drum kit. Plenty of people just want to be famous. Daiela actually wants to be great.
