In Rotation: Humble the Great

Before he was anchoring the boards for London’s alt-soul scene, Humble the Great was studying musical theatre. You can hear that stage training in how he projects his voice, but thankfully, none of the theatrics made it into the booth. Instead, the American-born, UK-based artist has spent the last few years as a crucial behind-the-scenes architect. He racked up seven credits on Cat Burns’ chart-topping How To Be Human and executive produced projects for his partner Amie Blu and labelmate Kamal.

Now, he is stepping fully into the light. Humble just dropped his debut album, i don’t mind floating, his second full-length release of 2024. The standout moment for me is "left you."

Producers who transition to the microphone usually hide behind heavy vocal processing or cluttered drum programming. They are terrified of sounding naked on the track. Humble doesn't do that sh*t. "left you" opens with a bare, solitary piano progression. When his vocal enters, it carries a raspy, unvarnished texture. He dissects a collapsing relationship over chords that lean closer to Americana than traditional UK R&B.

By pulling in his live bandmates—Worm on production and Hargs on keys—Humble freed himself up to focus entirely on the pen. The result sounds incredibly tactile. He cites Dijon and Anderson .Paak as inspirations, and you immediately hear that same live-room philosophy. You can practically hear the wood of the instruments and the scuff of a shoe on the studio floor. The bass slides underneath the second verse with a loose, organic groove that grounds the entire record.

People are finally waking up to what he is building. "left you" just cracked the top ten on Spotify’s Fresh Finds R&B playlist, and college stations like Cleveland’s WRUW 91.1 FM are already spinning it. He even dropped a visual for "IRIDESCENT" that proves his on-camera charisma isn't a fluke.

He built the world for everyone else. Now he owns his own.

Hear it below.
