In Rotation: We are Nubia
Before they were commanding festival stages at Blankets & Wine alongside Tems, Maggie Atieno and Gloria Munga were just two voices harmonizing in Nairobi’s Uhuru Park. Back in 2020, We are Nubia started as a five-piece choir group singing covers for the internet. As the other members drifted away to pursue standard careers, Maggie and Gloria kept the name—which translates to gold—and officially traded their law and IT degrees for the booth. The Kenyan duo has been building a rock-solid foundation of Afro-R&B and Swahili storytelling ever since. They caught Nairobi's ear with the 2024 heartbreak cut "Niko Sawa," but it was last year's "DnD" featuring Zaituni Wambui that shifted the tectonic plates. They hit the studio wanting to write a bad girl anthem and walked out with a regional smash. The beat incorporates heavy Taarab rhythms, proving Maggie and Gloria can bridge traditional East African textures with modern R&B bounce. In February, they dropped their debut EP, Needs, produced entirely by Run and penned by Andrew Ochiko. The five-track project is a masterclass in vocal chemistry. On "Available," the duo glides over a Kompa and Zouk-infused groove that feels tailor-made for a late-night summer function. The Afro-soul closer "Forever" strips the production back to let their harmonies breathe. I'll call it right now: while a lot of the East African streaming market is busy chasing whatever sound is dominating London or Atlanta, We are Nubia’s absolute refusal to abandon Kiswahili lyricism is exactly what makes them undeniable. They aren't watering down their culture for a crossover. They are making the diaspora come to them. The industry is finally catching up to the vision. They recently inked a deal with Kenya-based label The Future and bagged an AFRIMA nomination. Just this week, Audiomack slotted their joint "Healer" at #8 on the Discover Afrosounds playlist. The momentum is real, but the music is the actual prize. Check it out below.
