In Rotation: KAIRO

Nigerian-born, Texas-raised twin brothers EJ and Ak didn't take the traditional route to a Def Jam deal. They built their foundation flipping acoustic covers on TikTok back in 2021. A lot of acts get stuck in that algorithm loop, churning out 15-second hooks for eternity until the app moves on. KAIRO actually learned how to write full records. Their debut EP, Love Letters from Houston, proved they had the pen to match the viral harmonies, anchoring their sound in the city that raised them. Fast forward to now, and they are operating on a completely different level. Following their debut album, they recently dropped "BRAND NEW" and linked up with Amelia Moore for "PLACEHOLDER." But it's "JUST WHEN IT'S OVER" that has been dominating my speakers all week. The vocal stacking is ridiculous. They layer these dense harmonies over pop production that actually has some swing to it. The drums hit right in the pocket, leaving enough space for their voices to carry the melody without fighting the beat. When the hook drops, the bass line thickens up just enough to give the track a physical weight. I remember when R&B and pop groups actually had to know how to harmonize live. You couldn't just stack a bunch of takes in Pro Tools and call it a day. EJ and Ak have that old-school vocal discipline, but they package it in a sound that feels entirely current. Most major label pop duos sound like they were assembled in a boardroom by executives chasing whatever sound worked last month. KAIRO sounds like two brothers who grew up singing in the exact same room, figuring out how to make their voices bleed into one another. That kind of blood harmony can't be A&R'd. It takes years of trial and error. The industry is catching up to the talent. "JUST WHEN IT'S OVER" just slid into Spotify's #NowWatching and This Is Frequency playlists, while their feature on "Well, are we having fun yet?" is currently sitting on Mellow Bars. The momentum is real, but the music is what matters. They actually give a sh*t about the craft. Hit play below.
