In Rotation: Ms Ray
London imprint Scenic Route has a track record for catching lightning in a bottle—they helped break Nourished by Time before the masses caught on. Now, they’re backing a hometown artist named Ms Ray, and her latest EP, MELT, is currently holding my rotation hostage. Ms Ray operates in a left-field sophisti-pop pocket that pulls from a very specific lineage of UK soul and 80s R&B. If you go back to her 2020 EP, WOW IS NOW, you’ll hear a glossier, highly polished soul finish. MELT strips that high-gloss sheen away to reveal the raw wiring. On standout tracks like "Thin Ice" and "Miss You," the architecture relies heavily on thick, driving R&B basslines walking underneath retro analog synths. The drums hit with a blunt, heavy thud. She sings about romantic wreckage and new sparks with an unvarnished intimacy, maneuvering through the tracks without relying on exhausting vocal gymnastics. She just delivers the lyrics straight, letting that deep pocket do the heavy lifting while the synths wash over the top. The organic growth happening right now proves I'm not the only one catching the vibe. Spotify’s POLLEN playlist scooped up both "Thin Ice" and "Miss You" this week, pushing her left-of-center sound to a massive audience. But it’s not just algorithmic love. Actual human DJs at Sirius XMU and terrestrial college stations from New Mexico to Utah are putting her in heavy rotation. Her Soundcloud following doubled over the last few days alone. If you watch the new official video for "Cornerstone," the appeal clicks instantly. She commands the frame with a natural magnetism, completely unbothered by industry trends. A lot of modern pop tries to fake the funk with vintage filters and borrowed aesthetics to mask weak songwriting. Ms Ray just writes better songs. Check it out below.
