In Rotation: Lila Dupont

At 17, Lila Dupont bought a red-eye ticket from New York to a tiny town in Scotland without ever visiting first, just to get her degree and figure out her chords. She spent the last three and a half years over there, trading the city grid for the cold coast. You hear that distance in the music. She started writing on the piano at 14, originally leaning into indie-pop. As she collaborated with her producer overseas, the sound shed its digital layers and settled into pure acoustic territory.

Listen to her recent release Southeast Dixie Highway or the new video for "Seaside." The production refuses to crowd her. You get warm acoustic guitar strumming and a vocal tone that sits right in the dead center of the mix. When she hits the hook on "Six String," the bass drops in just enough to hold the floor while her voice drives the rhythm. She cites Gillian Welch and Gregory Alan Isakov as blueprints. Welch operates entirely in traditional Americana dust. Dupont maintains a sharp pop clarity in her vocal runs—a remnant of her New York upbringing.

She is prepping her debut five-song EP for early 2025 before a planned move to Nashville. My only concern is that Nashville executives will try to polish her up. A&Rs love taking a pristine voice and drowning it in glossy radio production. They need to leave her alone. Her best weapon is bare instrumentation.

The organic build is already moving. "Seaside" just hit Spotify’s Fashionably Early playlist at number nine, and Apple Music slotted "Six String" onto New Music Daily. Even independent radio is spinning her, from Outlaw Country in D.C. up to WERU in Bangor. She found her pocket. Now we just watch her work.
